Birthday Celebrations

I was recently interviewed for a magazine article about celebrations. Should you plunge in and eat sweets and fatty foods or try to stick to your guns and restrict yourself? I’m a big believer in moderation and enjoying the foods that come along with celebrations (keeping in mind you don’t have a disease you are trying to manage where those foods may cause problems). I really think the trick with treats is to have them less frequently and to not make a big deal out of them. When people restrict with dieting they often end up overeating these foods when they are around. Sort of a “forbidden fruit” type of mentality. I say, give up any restrictive eating and adopt a balanced mindset: Eat whole foods most of your days, have a cookie here and there and enjoy cake at your birthday.

Speaking of celebrations, it was our 3-year old birthday celebration this weekend. It’s truly hard to believe it’s been 3 years. As my sister-in-law says, the days are long, but the years are fast when it comes to little kids. We had a small family party and my kids decided they wanted a truck/car theme so as you can see, I did the best I could with decorating their cupcakes.  The roller and dump trucks were so easy and I’d definitely suggest using this idea – SO EASY! The cars…a little more difficult, but not too hard.

Dump Trucks:

I simply crushed chocolate animal crackers and placed in a pile in dump truck and cupcake. I also made the road for the cars out of the crushed crackers.

Roller Trucks:

Easiest of all…simply dumping some mini chocolate chips for the roller to run over. I thought these were the cutest.

Cars:

I used mini chocolate chips for the outline of the road, crushed chocolate animal crackers for the inside and then used white icing for the road lines. I also added a few flowers along side of the road. Those of you who are better with cake decorating can probably nail this better than I!

The kids loved it and we enjoyed our celebration. The next day Mr. was begging me for second helpings of his carrot snacks…perfect example of enjoying your celebration and stepping back into your normal lifestyle the next day. A great lesson learned from a young man who loves his carrots as much as he loves his cake.
