Finding ways to exercise with kids

I’m always looking for ways to sneak in exercise during the day by focusing on activities I can do with the kids. Thanks to Birdie’s physical therapist her balance exercise can double as core exercise for me. She has me get on my back, load Birdie into sitting position on my stomach facing me and then I get up on all fours and walk like a crab. I am hitting some muscles I haven’t felt in a long while and Birdie loves working on her balance.

Right now in my life exercise has to work within my day with the kids. During the time I have help (12 hours a week) I have various appointments for my kids, my own appointments and work so I really don’t have that extra time to block off for exercise. I imagine there are a lot of other parents out there facing the same issues. I think you can make it work by prioritizing exercise and making it part of your routine activities and of course using some creativity. My main exercise is our wagon rides which I wrote about in a previous post. I’m happy to say I lost the last of my stubborn “baby weight” with my walks. Now I have our new crab exercises I can do each morning, perfect to hit some core strengthening and lastly our dance time for some fun cardio.  

Dance time might be my favorite. We don’t have structured dance lessons or anything…we just throw on some videos and dance with reckless abandon in the living room each evening. I have to say…I am very happy the windows face the backyard because I can easily make a fool of myself to get my kids excited and laughing. The evening brings that big energy spark in toddlers that often ends in someone crying with lots of bumps and bruises so I figure why not get their energy out at this time in a fun way. I get in some cardio and the kids get a chance to enjoy movement and just be crazy and silly. Birdie who probably enjoys dance time the most loves herself Janet Jackson’s “Someone to call my lover” and wants me to play it over and over. Tiny likes to mimic me and Mr. really has some interesting moves of his own like waving his arms in the air with squinty eyes and a full on head bang as if he’s at a Metallica concert (I have no idea where he learned this. Alright, alright…you can take the girl out of Spokane, but you can’t take the Spokane out of the girl).  

I’m sure one day I’ll have time to designate for exercise in an adult manner, but for now I’ll just keep adding new ideas to my list to keep myself moving. Feel free to share if you have any fun ways to exercise with kids…I like having lots of options!

haha!! I can see us moving from the evening karaoke to dance time!! Keep posting the ideas!

Yes…I can see one person doing karaoke while the other dances and then switch! Kids will love it!

We really liked pillow case races. Another event to do with the curtains drawn!!
